The Transition Years are working hard on their ‘Young Social Innovators’ project. They are looking at literacy and Facebook usage. Already, they have worked with Scoil Bhride on their reading programme. Next term they will run a readathon and hopefully, raise money for our school Library. Continue reading

The Transition Year students of Portlaoise College have been participating in an 8 week course called “The Drug Peer Awareness Course”.  Over the course of the 8 weeks the students have learned about drugs and addiction, the origins of drugs, the content of drugs and indeed how dangerous they are.  The course has been provided by Karen Bambrick through the offices of Laois Youth Development. Transition YearA Transition Year Perspective on Transition Year…’ written by Danielle MacDonald

“Transition Year is a year where we get the chance to mature and do things we have never done before. It gives us a chance to sample all the subjects and extra-curricular activities. We have to do 40% of the Leaving Certificate course. We work mostly on project work, team work and enter a lot of competitions such as BT young scientist, Formula 1 and Y.S.I. We have a lot of speakers in from different organisations. This year gives us time to get to know ourselves better and our class mates, it gives us time to improve on our communication and social skills.” Continue reading

The past term has been one of the busiest terms for sport in Portlaoise College for the past few years. The numbers of students participating in organised sport in the school has increased and this has also improved the schools fortunes on the sporting fields. The school’s Boys’ Basketball teams were first off the blocks in September and competed fiercely with the Seniors enjoying victories over Roscrea and Castledermot and the Juniors defeating Castledermot also. Alas qualification for the next round eluded both teams and they bowed out with their heads held high. Well done to all involved including Mr. Murphy and Ms. Walshe.  The U14 girls’ Basketball team have also competed well and are due to play in the Laois Championships Finals shortly with Ms Scully. First and Second Year students visited Dundrum shopping centre in December as part of the annual Ice Skating Trip. This trip has a long tradition in the school having first started in 2002.
