On the 22nd February at 5:15 a.m., the Student Council and five teachers left Portlaoise College and made their way to Belgium. We landed in Brussels at 11 a.m. Our bus was waiting for us, so we went to the hotel to drop off our bags. Then, the bus dropped us to the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History. We saw the different army uniforms that different countries wore during the 1st and 2nd world wars and we saw the different planes that existed at the time. We also viewed exhibits of armoured tanks and military helicopters.
After that, our next stop was the European Parliament. On the way to the European Parliament, we stopped at a little kiosk where we got ‘Au met Chocolat’ which were waffles with chocolate on top. We all loved them! When we arrived to the European Parliament, we got headphones that you had to scan and listen to the story of the formation of the European Union. It was very interesting.
After that we went back to the hotel where we got to relax and get ready for the meal. At 7 p.m we went to get our dinner. We found a nice restaurant and the food was lovely. After the lovely dinner we went to the Grand Place. The Grand Place is the central square of Brussels. It is surrounded by guildhalls, the city’s Town Hall, and the Bread house. The square is the most important tourist destination and most memorable landmark in Brussels. It measures 68 by 110 metres (223 by 360 ft). All of us were amazed by what we saw. It was beautiful. We then went back to the hotel to get some sleep because we had to get up early the next morning.
When we woke up the next morning we got our breakfast and we made our way to the Chocolate Factory. In the Chocolate Factory, there was a man who showed us how to make different shapes out of chocolate. For example, he made a Micky Mouse head using a mask. Also in the Chocolate Factory there was a small museum upstairs where there were pictures of chocolate statues, a cocoa plant in a jar, and tasting chocolate.
After that we went back to the hotel, packed our bags and went to Bruges! We spent 4 hours walking around Bruges and enjoying the sites. There were lots of shops, restaurants, cafes and beautiful buildings. We then went back to the bus which took us to the airport. It was an excellent trip and I would definitely recommend Brussels as a place to visit.
