A Poetry Aloud event was held at Portlaoise College on October 15th . It wasthe Laois regional heat of a national competition for poetry recital. Because it is the 105th anniversary of Yeats’ birth, the prescribed poems were all Yeats poems: The Fiddler of Dooney, No Second Troy and The White Birds. Students chose a second poem from a wide selection.
Poetry Aloud is organised by Poetry Ireland and the National Library of Ireland. Since it was launched in 2006, Poetry Aloud has grown from just a few hundred entries to over 1,700 entries in 2014. All 32 counties compete.
95 students participated. 9 students went through to the semi finals which will held in the National Library of Ireland. It is the fifth year that Portlaoise College hosted the event and the judges were full of appreciation for the support given by the school, and the quality of the students who competed.
First year student, Kevin Dillon will represent the school in the semi-finals in November.

Portlaoise College Open Night Tuesday 13th October 2016

A large crowd arrived to view the facilities & staff and to enroll for the academic year 2015/2016 in Portlaoise College second level on Tuesday night.

Parents and future students listened to a talk from the school principal Noel Daly, present students ………………….. describing the school environment, curriculum and extra curricular activities. They were then led on a tour around the school where they viewed staff and students undertaking curricular activities with great gusto.

First Year students from Portlaoise College visited Portlaoise library recently. They walked down to this with their English teachers and were given a tour of the library facilities by librarian Suzanne Carroll; ending with an activity involving their knowledge of the Dewy system! Student Wiktoria Wojtkiewicz said “the library visit was both fun and interesting”
