A Poetry Aloud event was held at Portlaoise College on October 15th . It wasthe Laois regional heat of a national competition for poetry recital. Because it is the 105th anniversary of Yeats’ birth, the prescribed poems were all Yeats poems: The Fiddler of Dooney, No Second Troy and The White Birds. Students chose a second poem from a wide selection.
Poetry Aloud is organised by Poetry Ireland and the National Library of Ireland. Since it was launched in 2006, Poetry Aloud has grown from just a few hundred entries to over 1,700 entries in 2014. All 32 counties compete.
95 students participated. 9 students went through to the semi finals which will held in the National Library of Ireland. It is the fifth year that Portlaoise College hosted the event and the judges were full of appreciation for the support given by the school, and the quality of the students who competed.
First year student, Kevin Dillon will represent the school in the semi-finals in November.
