Portlaoise College reached a major milestone this May when we were awarded the title of ‘21st Century School of Distinction‘ for 2016 by Trinity College Dublin in honour of our work with the College For Every Student (CFES) programme which we introduced this year.
The CFES programme involves practicing four core activities across the school. These activities are:
• Leadership
• Mentoring
• Raising college awareness
• 21st Century Teaching & Learning
The competition judges from Trinity College Dublin and CFES recognised the fantastic work taking place across the school as part of these core activities. The judges noted:
“We commend your involvement in College Awareness Week and noted that 15 HEIs were involved. All 6th years went to UL and Carlow open days. All 2nd years received a campus tour from UL. Every 6th year student has applied for a post-secondary course. Under Leadership, we commend the excellent work in organising the 5k Run/walk in aid of the Donal Walsh Foundation. The trip to Gambia and fundraising for same was very positive. They noted also the volunteering experience for Syria and the sponsored walk. The panel commended plans to do Leadership through Service activities for all cohorts next year. They were impressed with the scale of the mentoring and its inclusion of teachers in the process. They also noted the speed career meet including a whole range of professional role models.”
Trinity College and CFES would like to thank all the teachers and students of Portlaoise College for organising such excellent CFES activities. Special thanks to Mr. Kenny, Ms. Walshe, Ms. Cullen and Mr. Qualter, for co-ordinating CFES in the school. Also, congratulations to Mr. Kelly and Mr. McClearn who successfully completed a post-graduate course in TCD as part of the professional development for CFES.
