Course objective

This is a one year full time pre-university science course. The course will allow the student to learn and practice some of the key scientific skills needed at third level.  The course will give students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and confidence in a range of science subjects including biology, anatomy, chemistry and material science.

The mathematics element allows students to bring their mathematics levels up to the competence relevant to their intended third level course. As well as developing a grounding in science, students will also develop team work and effective communication skills on this course.

 

Progression

Graduates may pursue science certificate or degree courses in UCD, TCD, DCU, Maynooth University, DIT, IT Blanchardstown, UCC as well as other IT Colleges around the country or in the UK. This course also provides students the opportunity to apply to sport science related courses including strength and conditioning and sports rehabilitation.

Work experience

Students must obtain 10 days’ work experience in a vocational related area. Garda Clearance maybe required for work experience.

Entry requirements

Students should be of Leaving Certificate standard or Applied Leaving Certificate with distinction. Portlaoise College Institute of Further Education welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and may not require the above qualifications.

Student Grants

Eligible Students may apply for a Further Higher Education Grant or in some cases Back to School Allowance.

Students may apply on-line from the 23rd January 2017. Facilities will be available in Portlaoise College Institute of Further Education for students to apply on-line on Thursday 9 March 2017 between 5pm and 7.00pm (Open Evening)
