Course Objectives

This is a full-time course designed to meet the needs of people interested in a career in engineering.  This one year pre-engineering course is a foundation for students who wish to pursue further studies in electronic or mechanical engineering in a Third Level Institution.

The one year pre-engineering course aims to equip students with the necessary practical skills for employment in the engineering industry or as a foundation for students who wish to pursue further studies in electronic or mechanical engineering in a Third Level Institution.

Work Experience

Students must obtain 10 days work experience in a vocational related area. Garda Clearance maybe required for work experience

Entry Requirements

Students should be of Leaving Certificate or an equivalent standard of education. Portlaoise College also welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and may not require the above qualifications.

Certificate in Engineering Technology QQI Level 5 Code 5M2061

Student Grants

Eligible students may apply for a Further Higher Education Grant or Back to Education Allowance.

Progression

– A range of programmes at Higher Level Institutions such as Carlow IT
– Apprenticeships – mechanical and electrical areas.

Progression links are possible with this course to some Higher Education Institutions through the QQI Higher Education Links Scheme.

It is important to consult the appropriate Higher Education Institutes (HEI’S) to get essential information about content of courses, entry requirements, duration, career progression etc.

 Enrolment

Students may apply on-line from the 23rd January 2017. Facilities will be available in Portlaoise College Institute of Further Education for students to apply on-line on Thursday 9 March 2017 between 5pm and 7.00pm (Open Evening)
