Course objective

This new Level 6 award aims to give graduates an advanced level of knowledge and sought after industry qualifications. The course will run over three days per week with a further two days spent in an industry based work placement. Students who possess a fitness instruction qualification will have the opportunity to attain the ITEC Certificate in Personal Training, while those who enter without a fitness qualification will be offered the ITEC Certificate in Gym Based Exercise.

Personal training is recognised consistently as a strong growth career worldwide, while the leisure industry has withstood the recession to consistently provide a range of career options in Ireland and abroad.

Entry Requirements

A FETAC/QQI Level 5 award in Sport & Recreation/ Sport, Recreation & Exercise. All qualified applicants will be interviewed.

It is envisaged that students will be offered a choice from a range of other industry certifications including:

  • ITEC Certificate in Nutrition
  • ITEC Certificate in Exercise to Music

Course Duration

1 Year Full Time – 3 days on site in College plus 2 days industry based placement two days per week.

 Work experience

In order to meet the work experience module requirements (& also for SUSI grant purposes) students will be required to attend an industry based placement two days per week.

Fees for additional workshops availed of during the course will be payable directly to the course provider.

Entry requirements

Students should be of Leaving Certificate standard or Applied Leaving Certificate with distinction and interview. Portlaoise College welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and may not require the above qualifications.

 Student Grants

Eligible students may apply for a Further Higher Education Grant or Back to Education Allowance.

Progression Opportunities

You will have excellent work opportunities in many areas of the leisure industry; including coaching, leisure facilities, health services and youth and education services.

Students are eligible to apply for places on a wide range of Higher Certificate and Degree Courses through the QQI Higher Education Link Scheme, in areas including Sport & Recreation, Health & Fitness, Sport Coaching, Leisure Management and Physical Education.

Holders of the QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Sports, Recreation & Exercise may also progress to further studies at Institutes of Technology/Universities. Advanced entry links onto specialised Sport courses are currently been developed with Waterford Institute of Technology.

Students may apply on-line from the 23rd January 2017. Facilities will be available in Portlaoise College Institute of Further Education for students to apply on-line on Thursday 9 March 2017 between 5pm and 7.00pm (Open Evening)
