Course Aims

This course is designed to enable students to develop personal qualities, knowledge, skills and academic qualifications required for careers in youth and community work, social work, pastoral care, care provision and teaching. This course explores social studies and examines society. There is also a strong emphasis on knowledge and skills required to work with clients in the care setting.

Work Experience

Students must obtain 10 days’ work experience in a vocational related area. Garda Clearance is required for work experience.

Entry Requirements

All students must have successfully completed the Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied with distinction and interview. Mature students are assessed on their merits and do not have to have the above qualifications. Exceptions may be made for some courses.

Awards

  • Certificate in Applied Social Studies – QQI Level 5
  • Certificate in Occupational First Aid (at an additional cost)
  • Certificate in Manual Handling (at an additional cost)

Progression

Successful QQI Level 5 award holders may apply for places in Third Level Colleges, e.g. Universities and Institutes of Technology, to further their education. Students are eligible to apply for the Advanced Certificate in Community Development in Portlaoise College.

Student Grants

Eligible students may apply for a Further Higher Education Grant or Back to Education Allowance.

Enrolment

Students may apply on-line from the 23rd January 2017. Facilities will be available in Portlaoise College Institute of Further Education for students to apply on-line on Thursday 9 March 2017 between 5pm and 7.00pm (Open Evening)
