Course Objective

This course is designed to develop the communication, intellectual, practical and caring skills essential for people working with children (0-6 years).   This  programme offers an introduction to the Montessori approach in early years education.  This programme offers an excellent foundation for people new to the study of Childcare and for those with limited practical experience.

Work Experience

Students must obtain 20 days’ work experience in a vocational related area. Garda Clearance is required for work experience.

Entry Requirements

Students should be of Leaving Certificate standard or Applied Leaving Certificate with distinction and interview. Portlaoise College welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and may not require the above qualifications.

Awards

Certificate in Early Childhood Care & Education QQI Level 5
Certificate in Occupational First Aid (at an additional cost)
Manual Handling Certificate (at an additional cost).

Student Grants

Eligible students may apply for a Further Higher Education Grant or Back to Education Allowance

Progression

Successful QQI Level 5 Award Holders may apply for places in Third Level Colleges, e.g. Universities and Institutes of Technology, to further their education. Students may also progress onto the Advanced Certificate in Supervision in Childcare – QQI Level 6.

Enrolment

Students may apply on-line from the 1st February 2015.
Facilities will be available in Portlaoise  College Institute of Further Education for students to apply on-line on Wednesday 28 January 2015 between 5pm and 8.00pm (Open Evening)
