Course Aims

This one year full-time course is designed to aid learners to develop a knowledge and understanding of the history of Community Development in the Irish context, along with a comprehensive understanding of the world of work from a community development perspective. The course also helps learners to develop the capacity to work independently and provides a gateway to further study at Level 7 (Bachelor Degree) or Level 8 (Honours Bachelor Degree).

Work Experience

Students must obtain a minimum of 1 day per week work experience in a vocational related area. Garda Clearance is required for work experience.

Entry Requirements

This is an advanced Certificate course for those who have successfully completed a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Social Studies/Community Development or equivalent. Entry is subject to interview/assessment and depends on satisfactory completion of an induction programme and Garda Vetting.

Student Grants

Eligible students may apply for a Further Higher Education Grant or Back to Education Allowance

Progression

Holders of a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Community Development may progress to further studies at Institutes of Technology/Universities. Alternatively you may directly enter employment within community organisations. A link has been established with Carlow IT to progress into 2nd and 3rd year of relevant degree programmes based on QQI Level 6 results.

Enrolment

Students may apply on-line from the 1st January 2015.
Facilities will be available in Portlaoise  College Institute of Further Education for students to apply on-line on Wednesday 28 January 2015 between 5pm and 8.00pm (Open Evening)
