This course develops skills in the use of traditional techniques and incorporates the requirement for competency in computer aided design (CAD) and manufacture. The broad approach allows graduates to enter the segment of the industry that most appeals to them, ranging from craft based workshops to modern furniture manufactures.
The one year course aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to work effectively in the areas of design, drawing, woodturning and joinery.

Students must obtain 10 days’ work experience in a vocational related area. Garda Clearance maybe required for work experience.
Students should of Leaving Certificate Standard or an Applied Leaving Certificate with distinction and interview. Portlaoise College also welcomes applications from mature students.
Mature students are assessed on their merits and may not require the above qualifications.
Certificate in Furniture Design and Making QQI Level 5 Code 5M2012
Students who qualify in this area can pursue further study and a career in Furniture Design, CAD Draughts person, Carpentry or Joinery, Cabinet Making, Furniture Making and Industrial Design.
Eligible students may apply for a Further Higher Education Grant or Back to Education Allowance.
Students may apply on-line from the 1st February 2015.
Facilities will be available in Portlaoise College Institute of Further Education for students to apply on-line on Wednesday 28 January 2015 between 5pm and 8.00pm (Open Evening)
