The certificate in Mathematical Applications is an ideal course for students who wish to study a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) subject at third level.
This course is ideally suited to students who feel that they may need to boost their maths skills before going to study a STEM subject at degree level.
With maths also a requirement to gain entry to many 3rd level courses this course is ideal for anyone who wishes to obtain an alternate Leaving Certificate maths qualification. Students will not need to have passed maths at leaving certificate level to study on this course.

The course is designed so that modules interlink, meaning assignments are integrated allowing for more time to develop an understanding of the topics. The areas of Calculus, Trigonometry and Geometry are studied during the year. A good level of understanding in these areas is necessary to study Engineering Science and I.T to degree level. Binary and Algorithms are introduced in maths for computing.
Spread Sheets will allow students to carry out Business and Financial Calculations, and create templates to solve everyday problems using a range of functions.
The study skills module introduces students to essential skills such as researching and presentation information, academic writing and referencing. These are skills which may not been developed during 2nd level, but play an essential part of study at 3rd level.
The Professional Development Module consists of a career investigation, where the students are required to investigate careers, which is beneficial to any student who is still unsure of what career path is right for them.
Students must obtain 10 days work experience in a vocational related area. Garda Clearance maybe required for work experience
Applicants must have successfully completed their Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent. Mature students (over 23) may be exempt from standard entry requirements. In addition applicants will have to be interviewed before being offered a place on a course.

Eligible students may apply for a Further Higher Education Grant or in some cases Back to School Allowance

Facilities will be available in Portlaoise College Institute of Further Education for students to apply on-line on Wednesday 28 January 2015 between 5pm and 8.00pm (Open Evening)
