The Parents Council of Portlaoise College is always very active throughout the School year. Some Parents Council members represent the Parents at Key School involvement, such as Fund raising events, The Awards Night, while others volunteer to assist with catering, decorating and preparing at other events such as the ‘Open Night’ and the ‘Graduation Night.’ Parents are also involved in reviewing and drafting School Policies. The Parents Council donate funds to good causes through the school e.g. committed to donating partial funds towards Scholarships for 6th Year Students
Portlaoise College Parent’s Council have worked closely with school management for the introduction of a school blazer for all first year students next year. A survey was carried out at the Open Night and prospective parents voted whether or not to go ahead with the blazer.
Working in conjunction with the Student Council, the Parent’s Council have organised Student I.D. cards. These cards entitle students to discounts in various shops both locally and nationwide.
Since last year, the Parent’s Council have been planning a Road Safety Week. This was the first of its kind in Ireland and saw all three agencies coming together, the Garda Síochana Traffic Corp, the National Ambulance Service and Laois Co. Fire Rescue Service. They gave fantastic displays and talks from Monday 26th to Friday 30th November to Transition Year and Fifth Year students. It was an excellent initiative and hopefully contributes to the saving of lives in the future.
In the New Year the Parent’s Council, plan to organise a speaker on suicide prevention. This talk will be held in January and all parents will be notified in advance. The Parent’s Council welcome as many parents as possible to their meetings with all the times and dates of meetings listed in the school calendar and the students homework journal.
Our Parents Council is of great support to the School. Meetings are normally held 6 times a year, although this may vary and usually conclude within the hour and membership of the Parent Council is open to all parents.
Our Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday, 19th September, 2013, the following Officers were elected for a two year tenure as follows:

The goals of the Parents Council are to:
- Disseminate School related information
- Provide a vehicle for parent’s input/participation
- Serve as an overall support system for the School
- Promote contact and establish effective relationships between the School and others
