Home economics–scientific and social is an applied subject combining theory with practice in order to develop understanding and solve problems. It is concerned with the way individuals and families manage their resources to meet physical, emotional, intellectual, social and economic needs.

The syllabus consists of the following areas:

  • Food Studies – 45%
  • Resource Management & Consumer Studies – 25%
  • Social Studies – 10%

As part of the core area all Leaving Cert students must complete a practical coursework project.  This is based in the food studies area and will make up 20% of the candidates Leaving Certificate result.  
This is an intensive project with a focus on food science but it is an advantage to any student who is willing to make a substantial effort.
