6th Year LCVP and Business students from Portlaoise College, organised a ‘Visit In’ from local entrepreneur, Mr. John McNamee of Eason’s Portlaoise (formerly known as: Laois Educational Supplies). During the visit, Mr. McNamee discussed and highlighted the central role of the bookshop in Portlaoise town as a service to the local community and talked about the future of “books” in the face of competition from the Internet and digitalisation. Students were told of the importance of changing with the times and the importance of offering products and services based on customer taste and wants.
Aspects of the Business curriculum were explained such as; the income and expenditure of a business to the channels of distribution for books. This was followed by a question and answer session. This visit was fully organised by the 6th Year Business which involved LCVP Students approaching Mr. McNamee and requesting the visit, requesting permission from the principal Mr. Daly and organising the venue with the Deputy Ms. Cullen. Students wish to say a special thank you, to Mr. McNamee, who took the time from his busy schedule to come and talk to them.
