Portlaoise College recently entered three groups of 1st year students into the Laois Maths Quest competition which was held in conjunction with the Department of Education & Skills and Laois Education Centre. Great success was had by two of the groups as they came 1st and 2nd in the overall competition.
Many students from schools in Portlaoise took part in the competition which promoted problem solving (a huge part of the new Project Maths course). They had to describe a plan of action for arriving at their solution, list all the tasks they carried out and then mathematically show their approach used in arriving at the solution.
When asked what they thought about the competition each student said it was challenging and hard but that they really enjoyed it and it has helped their problem solving skills.
